● chromosphère nom féminin (anglais chromosphere) Région de l'atmosphère du Soleil ou d'une étoile, comprise entre la photosphère et la couronne.

n. f. ASTRO Région de l'atmosphère du Soleil située entre la photosphère et la couronne, d'une épaisseur un peu inférieure à 2 000 km, et de laquelle se détachent les protubérances et les éruptions.

ASTRON. Couche moyenne de l'atmosphère solaire située entre la photosphère et la couronne solaire et visible seulement lors des éclipses totales. Spectre de la chromosphère (Hist. gén. des sc., t. 3, vol. 1, 1961, p. 155). Pendant une éclipse totale on peut observer au voisinage immédiat du soleil une première enveloppe atmosphérique, relativement mince, de couleur rose : la chromosphère (E. SCHATZMAN, Astrophysique, 1963, p. 50).
Prononc. :[]. Étymol. et Hist. 1877 (LITTRÉ Suppl.). Empr. à l'angl. chromosphere « id. » (1868, 19 nov. Lockyer in Phil. Trans. CLIX. 430 ds NED : this envelope, which I propose to name the Chromosphere, a name suggested by Dr Sharpey) composé de chromo- (chromato-) et de sphere (élément suff. -sphère).
